On February 22, 2016 the library's cookbook club met for dinner with Alice Water's The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution and The Art of Simple Food II: Recipes, Flavor, and Inspiration from the New Kitchen Garden. The first book was published in 2007 and the follow-up book was published in 2013, both by Clarkson Potter Publishers.                       Only months earlier, our group cooked from the books of two former Chez Panisse...

On January 25, 2016 the library's cookbook club met for dinner with Jenny Rosenstrach's, Dinner: A Love Story published Harper Collins in 2012. When I first noticed this cookbook, it stood out from the crowd with its patchwork cover and diary turned cookbook theme. The photographs were sweet depictions of daily family life that didn't aim for perfection, but rather like the diary theme, were merely a record of lives being lived. The end pages are textured photos of burlap followed by...

On Monday, December 21 the library's cookbook club met for dessert with The Gourmet Cookie Book: The Single Best Recipe From Each Year 1941-2009 by the editors of Gourmet magazine, published in 2010 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Gourmet magazine was first published in January 1941 when its founder, Earle MacAusland launched his epicurean magazine just as World War II loomed on the horizon. The magazine ceased publication in November 2009, citing declining advertising sales and a...

On November 16, 2015 the library's cookbook club met for dinner with Rick Rodgers Thanksgiving 101: Foolproof Recipes for Turkey, Stuffing and Dressings, Cranberry Sauce, Pumpkin Pie, and More, originally published in 1998 and a second revised edition in 2007 by William Morrow. Who is Rick Rodgers? All of the cookbook club members had never heard of him before, but the cover of his book claims he is “America’s Thanksgiving Expert”. I'd originally chosen Sam Sifton's Thanksgiving:...

On October 19, 2015 the library's cookbook club met for dinner with David Lebovitz's, My Paris Kitchen: Recipes & Stories  published in 2014 by Ten Speed Press. The title of this book might make you think of Julia Child and her recipes and tales of French cooking, but inside you will find a different France, a France of the 21st century---one in which culinary culture has shifted to incorporate ingredients from around the world. David gives us some insight into the shifting...

On September 21, 2015 the library's cookbook club met for dinner with Melissa Clark's In the Kitchen with a Good Appetite: 150 Recipes & Stories About the Food You Love. Our group grew in size from 13 the month before to 19 for our second meeting. More members in attendance means more dishes to sample, and with 150 recipes in this book, 19 only scratched the surface of what it has to offer. I chose this book because I've cooked many recipes which my family and I really enjoyed,...

Reading in the Kitchen: a cookbook club held it's inaugural meeting on Monday, August 17, 2015. I chose Local Flavors: Cooking & Eating From America's Farmers' Markets by Deborah Madison because the timing seemed just right for the end of summer. Cookbook club members selected recipes from the book and brought in the prepared dish which we served buffet style in two courses. Followed by comments from each member, and of course, lots of delicious food and conversation. My plate was...
