Upstream: Collected Essays by Mary Oliver

Thu, 10/27/2016 - 1:37pm -- BHanley

In her newest publication, Mary Oliver shares her close observations of the natural world and her reflections on creativity, the act of writing, and her own literary influences (Emerson, Poe, Whitman, the Romantic poets, and others). Her wide-ranging meditations on human and animal friends, building a house, her beloved Provincetown, and ultimately, on the mysteries of living and dying are lucid and evocative, demonstrating why she is one of our most widely-acclaimed contemporary poets. While some of these essays are new, many are culled from earlier collections. Readers already familiar with Oliver’s poetry will undoubtedly find much to appreciate in these selections from her prose works.
