Set in 1950s Mexico, Mexican Gothic follows Noemí Taboada, a young anthropology student who, after receiving a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin, Catalina, begging Noemí to save her from some impending doom, travels to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside where Catalina cousin lives with her husband and his family.

High Place is home to the Doyle family - Howard, the old and imposing patriarch of the family, Florence, the unwelcoming woman-of-the-house, Virgil, Catalina’s alluring and predatory husband, and Francis, Florence’s son. From the moment Noemí arrives at High Place, she knows something is off about the Doyles. Even the house itself which has fallen into disrepair with mold growing on the walls and ceiling is menacing and wrong. Noemí knows she must do something to help her cousin who seems to be suffering a psychotic break and is experiencing visions and terrors of something within the house.

With help from Francis, the only member of the Doyle family who seems normal, Noemí must investigate the secrets of High Place in order to save her cousin, and herself, before it is too late.

Moreno-Garcia’s haunting and atmospheric gothic horror tale is expertly told with well-woven magical realism elements and Noemí is an unlikely but fierce heroine. Moreno-Garcia's writing is spellbinding with intoxicating descriptions of High Place and the horrors Noemí experiences during her stay so as a reader, you feel you are experiencing the horrors along with her. Recommended for fans of gothic horror and classics such as Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca.
