Climate Change & Rising Water: How Barrington Will be Affected

Join us for an informational lecture about how climate change and rising water will affect Barrington over the next century. Wenley Ferguson, Restoration Coordinator at Save the Bay, and Janet Freedman, a Coastal Geologist at the RI Coastal Resources Management Council will discuss and show maps to illustrate how future flooding and coastal erosion might impact Barrington. A question and answer period will follow the talk.

Free and open to all.

Janet Freedman is a Coastal Geologist with the RI Coastal Resources Management Council. She works on coastal hazard issues, mapping, and habitat restoration, emphasizing science based approach to coastal policy and planning. She is currently working on the Shoreline Change Special Area Management Plan (Beach SAMP), designed to identify areas that are at risk for coastal hazards, sea level rise, and other climate change impacts. She works in partnership with the University of RI and Eastern Connecticut State University monitoring shoreline changes along Rhode Island’s south shore and developing green infrastructure pilot projects within Narragansett Bay.

Janet is a member of the Education and Outreach Committee of the RI Flood Mitigation Association, the RI State Hazard Mitigation Committee, the Providence Harbor Commission, the Northeast Regional Ocean Council Coastal Hazards Committee, and the Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal and Ocean Observing Systems Board of Directors. Janet holds a M.S. in Geology from the University of RI Department of Geosciences and has worked at CRMC since 1999.

Wenley Fergusonhas worked at Save The Bay since 1990 on a variety of habitat and water quality assessment and restoration projects throughout Narragansett Bay and its watershed. Projects have included salt marsh and coastal buffer restoration projects, coastal adaptation assessments and stormwater infiltration assessment and implementation projects.  Wenley has worked with a number of coastal municipalities on the identification, planning, design and implementation of stormwater infiltration projects including rain gardens, bioretention areas and infiltration and filtration areas.  Wenley has experience developing conceptual plans and planting plans for stormwater infiltration projects and conducting planting with the support of volunteers and interns. Most recently, Wenley has designed, permitted and overseen the implementation of stormwater filtration and infiltration structures at low lying, coastal roads that are susceptible to tidal flooding and erosion in three coastal communities.
