Meet the Author: Aardvark to Axolotl

Meet the author Karen Donovan for a reading and signing of her book, Aardvark to Axolotl: Pictures From My Grandfather's Dictionary published by Etruscan Press in 2018.

An eclectic series of tiny stories and essays, the book is a collaboration of text and image based on vintage illustrations from a Webster's dictionary owned by the author's grandfather. Sometimes mysterious, sometimes downright weird, these small lyric tales work on the reader like alternative definitions for items drawn from a cabinet of curiosities.

Karen Donovan is also the author of two collections of poetry, Your Enzymes Are Calling the Ancients (Persea Books), which won the Lexi Rudnitsky/Editor's Choice Award, and Fugitive Red (University of Massachusetts Press), which won the Juniper Prize. From 1985 to 2005 she co-edited ¶: A Magazine of Paragraphs, a journal of very short prose published by Oat City Press. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She grew up in Barrington and currently works for a nonprofit in Providence.
