Magnifiers & Scanners

Magnifiers

Barrington Public Library offers two types of magnifiers for patrons to use: a LifeStyle HD magnifier and two RUBY handheld video magnifiers.

LifeStyle HD magnifier

The LifeStyle HD is an electronic magnifier for people with low vision, courtesy of OLIS (Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services). It is easy to use with various formats for display depending on your visual acuity. No sign-up, anyone can just go over to the table and use it. The magnifier is a self-service standalone machine located in the computer area on the library's first floor. Ask at the Reference Desk for additional information and/or assistance.

RUBY handheld video magnifier

The RUBY handheld video magnifier helps people who need assistance reading text and seeing document details. This on-the-go video magnifier has a 4.3-inch screen to magnify items from 5 to 10 times the original size. You can view items and read text with ease, even in dark rooms with the built-in LED lighting. RUBY’s slim design supports a wide range of reading needs to help you maintain your independence. We have two RUBY magnifiers and both can be borrowed for three weeks. There are no holds and no renewals. Limited to one per patron. The RUBY's are checked out from and must be returned to the Circulation Desk. The RUBYs are part of the Library of Things. The RUBY magnifiers were generously donated by the Barrington Lions Club.

Scanners

Barrington Public Library offers two self-service scanners available for patrons to use. These scanners are on the 1st floor in the public PC area and feature a few unique capabilities.

Touchless Overhead Scanner

The ScanSnap SV600 is perfect for scanning bound books, magazines, and delicate or historical documents. It can image material up to 11" x 17" tabloid paper size. The book or document is laid flat on the scanning mat and imaged without coming into contact with the scanner. The post-processing software then can deskew and flatten out the curve distortions from bindings in books and magazines. The image then goes through OCR processing for recognizable text characters and a searchable .pdf document is created.

Photo and Transparency Scanner

The Epson V800 is designed to digitally archive photographs and their associated film formats. This scanner features an 8.5" x 11.7" flat scan bed and 4800 dpi maximum optical resolution. This scanner is unique in the ability to image film and transparency formats. Using the available transparancy adapters, patrons can create individual image files from a variety of transparent media formats including 35mm slides, 35mm film strips, medium format film (6cm x 20cm), and 4" x 5" film.
