A Lively Circle

The Adaptations: From Short Story to Big Screen discussion group met this morning for our first discussion. Last week, we screened the 1948 film The Fallen Idol, directed by Carol Reed. Today, we gathered to talk about the movie and the short story that inspired it, “The Basement Room” by Graham Greene. Deborah Barchi, the Director of the Library, initiated the conversation, and the group ran with it. The story and the film have significant differences, and the discussion about them was lively, considered and fun.

We have three more stories and movies to consider before the series concludes, and I’m looking forward each one. But even more, I can’t wait to see what this very enthusiastic group will think and say.
